I've been meaning/trying to put together a pre-early signing day primer but keep getting too busy so I'll sling some shit in here

first off, out of the list of signees, it sounds like JUCO OL Bland is the only one from the list who will NOT sign on the early signing day (Dec 19, tomorrow), and that's because he's no longer a mid-term graduate, he's a May graduate, and thus he cannot sign on the early date because he's not qualified to do so.

also, there's a concern that he might check out some other schools before the Feb signing date, particularly FSU.  NU has been looking primarily at JUCOs who can enroll early and get into the program asap.  I like that line of thinking, because you probably only have 2 years with a JUCO, you don't want to waste one of those on development, get them in early and up to the training table and in the weight room and then learning the scheme in spring ball.  For NU to appear to be sticking with Bland at this point probably indicates that they really like his ability to potentially step in and immediately contribute in the interior OL even without being around for winter conditioning and spring ball.

position breakdown of who has verballed thus far:

QB - 1

RB - 3 (1 JUCO)
WR - 3 (this includes 1 Duck-R recruit)

TE - 1

OL - 4 (1 JUCO)

DT - 1

DE - 1

ILB - 3

OLB - 1

S - 2

CB - 1

that's 21 total, and this class could go as high as 30 even though I expect it to finish out somewhere around 27 or so and look for NU to be active in the grad transfer market this spring/summer

out of those positions, I think NU is done with their 1 QB for the cycle, and RB is probably done as well with 3 committed (although there is some talk that NU may still be interested in RB recruit Bivens who used to be highly ranked but he tore his ACL before his senior season and missed the entire year.  if NU has a spot available, they might take a shot at a player like this just to continue to increase the overall athleticism on the team, if he recovers anyway).  I think NU is looking to add another WR to the class, probably a bigger body type.   I think NU is done at TE, but will look to add one or two more OL.  It seems odd there isn't more activity on the NT front, NU must feel good about the rumors of the older Daniels transferring, plus I see Piper growing into a DT and possibly Ty Robinson as well (if he chooses NU) so maybe they're ok there, although there is talk that NU has offered S target Pola-Gates' cousin at DT/DE.  DE they're looking to add Ty Robinson for sure, and I think things are looking good for NU there.  ILB is done with 3.  OLB the staff is still looking to add a JUCO pass rusher to take a flyer on, and is still looking hard for a prep OLB to add as well.  for DB, I wouldn't be surprised to see NU take 3 more.  they're looking at a JUCO CB as well as prep CBs.  I also think they may take more DBs if the right kids are interested because their current S recruits, Farmer and Wright, both have a good chance to grow into OLBs down the road.

current early enrollees:

ILB Henrich

JUCO RB Mills

QB McCaffrey

TE Hickman

WR Nance

OLB Nelson

there's some key positions where enrolling early and participating in spring ball could give these kids a huge leg up on earning playing time next fall.  Mills at RB is probably the prime example.  Mo Washington is basically the only returning RB right now, so Mills has a chance to step in im mediately and take over a bulk of the carries that Oz had this season.  ILB is another thin spot and Henrich I am guessing will get himself in the mix to be a backup as a true frosh.  McCaffrey will redshirt if at all possible, but with 4 games to play in, the staff will work him into the mix.  TE Hickman needs a year at the training table and in the weight room and there's a logjam of decent players ahead of him.  WR Nance will have a shot to earn playing time by being here early in the spring since the only really proven WR returning is JD.    OLB Nelson I don't see making an early impact, but you never know.

other targets for NU:

S Pola-Gates (looked like NU may have pulled into the lead with the offer to his cousin, but now it sounds like he may not sign early after all so it will be interesting to see what happens with him.  his other cousin or sister or something is coming to Lincoln as a schollie softball player, btw)

DE Robinson (I think NU gets him in the Dec 19 signing day announcement)

DB Starks (sounds like he will no longer sign early)

JUCO OLB insert name here (it looks like NU is turning over any and all rocks trying to find a JUCO OLB pass rush specialist to add to the team)

DT Pola-Mao (not sure if academics are an issue)

OLB Mack (current Pitt commit)

CB Pritchett (current Auburn commit)

WR Njoku (recent Mizzou decommit)

RB Bivens (missed senior year due to knee injury)

DE Fonua (Feb signing day)

OT Fritzche (looked like NU was in the lead for another long term OT developmental project until local school Clemson offered so I think it will be tough for him to turn down staying home and playing for a local playoff contending team)

DE Banks (supposedly choosing between Baylor as an OT or NU as a DE on Dec 19, NU has a legit shot here)

JUCO LB Mathis (not sure about this one but I think NU is on the outside looking in)

OLB Summerall (NU put on the full court press but it's been rumored this kid has favored the florida schools for some time)

CB Mayo (looks like he is a west Virginia lean at this point, not sure NU is even still in the running)

I think after the early signing day it will be very interesting to see which new names pop up, and I think NU will be in the mix for a number of targets after the early signing day just because they're likely to have more schollies available than other teams still.
