for you LOTR fans, I pose a question:

 

at the council meeting in Rivendell with Elrond...

 

did Frodo volunteer to take the ring to Mordor because he saw that the ring would corrupt someone else and he wanted to help save Middle Earth

 

or

 

did Frodo volunteer to take the ring to Mordor because the ring was already starting to take hold of him and deep down he simply wanted to keep the ring for as long as possible?

I think he just wanted to go camping with Sam.

Neither. I think he realized that everyone else was going to argue endlessly and not get on with it. He figured that, with Elves and Dwarves and Men arguing over who should take it, he was the ideal compromise candidate that also had an actual claim on the Ring.

The bigger question would be why would Gandalf and Elrond let Frodo be the bearer?
Gandalf being the only Ainur there and may have had some foresight to see that only Frodo could fight off the temptation of the ring. Elrond would have had a little foresight as well.

Elrond raised his eyes and looked at him, and Frodo felt his heart pierced by the sudden keenness of the glance. 'If I understand aright all that I have heard,' he said, 'I think that this task is appointed for you, Frodo; and that if you do not find a way, no one will.'

Sure seems like Elrond had an inkling that Frodo was destined to be the Ring bearer.

Elrond is a descendant of Beren and Luthien.  Luthien was the daughter of Thingol (Elf) and Melien (Maia).  Gandalf is a Maia himself.  the Vala and the Maia together are the Ainur (Think of them as the Roman gods and demigods).  The Ainur together sang the great song which Eru (The one God) took and created all of the earth and laid out its history.  those who sang the song could remember the song and could have some foresight to what could happen in the future.
