This is why Doc Sadler has been pleading with Brandon Richardson to shoot the basketball with more frequency.

Richardson, a senior guard, scored a career-high 25 points Thursday night, leading the Nebraska basketball team to a 79-73 victory against Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa — the Huskers' first Big Ten Conference road victory.

Richardson was 9-of-10 from the field, including 6-of-7 on three-pointers. His last three-pointer, with 4:43 remaining, put the Huskers in front 66-63 — a lead they never relinquished.

"After I made a few, every time I threw it up, I felt like I was going to make it," Richardson said in a phone interview. "Luckily, I did."

Richardson, who averaged 6.5 points per game before Thursday's game, had made a combined three field goals over Nebraska's previous four games.

That includes a Jan. 11 victory against Penn State, when Richardson didn't even attempt a field goal.

"As I've said so many times, he's the one player in college basketball, I promise you, there's not another coach who has to beg (his player) to shoot like I do," Sadler said on his postgame radio show. "(It's) to the point where a lot of people think I've told Brandon not to shoot the ball.

"The fact of the matter, that's all I've been talking to him about for four years. 'Brandon, you're being too selfish. You've got to shoot the shots when you're open.' And tonight, he did do that."

For the third time this season, Nebraska (11-9, 3-6 Big Ten) overcame a double-digit deficit to win. The Huskers trailed by 11 points in the first half, and were down seven at halftime.

"I'm proud of our guys," said Richardson, who also had six rebounds, five assists and two steals. "We came out and we fought hard. We stuck to it and we fought to the end."

Nebraska, after committing 27 turnovers in Saturday's 34-point home loss to Ohio State, had a mere 11 turnovers against Iowa, with just three in the second half.

The Huskers, who weathered a field-goal drought of 6:25 in the first half, made eight straight shots in the second half, turning a 59-54 deficit into a 75-71 lead. Richardson had three of them, including a drive through the lane for a basket with 1:17 remaining for the four-point lead.

"I was just trying to be more aggressive," Richardson said.

Iowa cut the deficit to 75-73, and forced a missed shot with 40 seconds remaining, but Brandon Ubel tipped the rebound out to Richardson, who secured the ball.

That led to two free throws by Toney McCray with 27.3 seconds to play, and Bo Spencer, who had 16 points, made two more free throws to finish Nebraska's second road win this season.

"Any time you go on the road, it's a good feeling to know you played well enough to win," Sadler said. "I'm not for sure we played our best ball game tonight, but it feels so much better when maybe you don't and you still win.

"Great win for our players. Great, great win for our players."

It was Sadler's 100th victory at Nebraska.

Nebraska, which has averaged 46.5 points in its Big Ten losses, has scored at least 70 points in each of its three conference wins. The Huskers shot 51 percent against an Iowa team that was allowing a Big Ten-worst 73 points per game in conference games.

Dirk Chatlain says "Huskers, Hawkeyes, they're like twins"
Bo knows
"There's some guys that need to toughen up when it gets a little brisk out here. Wearing tights and stuff like that" for the love of God."
