For the past two seasons, Cody Green has been chasing the starting quarterback job at Nebraska.

His chase apparently has ended.

Green, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound junior-to-be, has requested a release from his scholarship and likely will transfer to another program, the Journal Star has learned. A native of Dayton, Texas, Green is unsure where he'll continue his playing career, two sources said.

Green on Friday informed Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini of his plans, evidently ending a two-season Husker career in which he appeared in 17 games, including four starts. He spent most of the 2009 season as a backup behind Zac Lee before playing a reserve role again last season behind Taylor Martinez.

Martinez, a sophomore-to-be, ended spring practice in mid-April ahead of Green and the other quarterbacks, Pelini said on April 20.

"It's always an ongoing competition," Pelini said then. "If we were to start a game today, Taylor Martinez would be our quarterback. We'd feel real comfortable with that."

Green seemed comfortable with Nebraska's quarterback situation during the early stages of spring practice in late March. He said he was patient in his bid to become the full-time starter.

"I guess that's just me, just my demeanor," he said at the time. "I'm going to sit back and let things come to me. It's hard to explain it."

Some of his patience stemmed from his appreciation for Nebraska's football tradition, he said.

"I've said ever since I got here that tradition was one of the big reasons why I was here," he said. "It's the tradition, the people, the family. That's what we are, a big family. We're a big family that will die for each other. You don't want to leave that. It's you. That's one of the main reasons I'm here."

His decision this week to leave Nebraska was excruciatingly difficult for Green, according to a source close to the quarterback. However, it should be noted the two coaches who played lead roles in recruiting Green to NU offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson and linebackers coach Mike Ekeler no longer are with the program. What's more, the Huskers' offense under new coordinator Tim Beck is expected to feature more running situations for the quarterback, which would be better suited for the ultra-fleet Martinez.

Although Green never was able to become the full-time starter, he had his moments at Nebraska. In his first career start, a 20-10 win at Baylor in 2009, he completed 12 of 21 passes for 128 yards with one interception. He also rushed for 43 yards on eight carries that day. In his second start, however, he struggled against Oklahoma and gave way to Lee in the second quarter. The two starts were the first by a true freshman quarterback at NU since Tommie Frazier in 1992.

Last season, with Martinez hobbled by injuries late in the season, Green led Nebraska to wins against Iowa State and Colorado. He played especially well in a must-win game against the Buffs, completing 10 of 13 passes for 80 yards, with no turnovers.

His career statistics: 66-for-122 passing (54.0 percent) for 657 yards and five touchdowns, with three interceptions. He rushed 68 times for 254 yards (3.7).

With Green out of the picture, Nebraska now has only two quarterbacks on scholarship Martinez and redshirt freshman Brion Carnes. True freshman Jamal Turner was recruited as a quarterback but moved to wide receiver/kick returner early in the spring season and shined in those roles. Recruit Bubba Starling this summer will pick between NU and pro baseball.

Kody Spano announced early last week that he was putting football aside because of injuries.

In addition, sophomore walk-on Ron Kellogg III shows promise. Former Aurora standout Tyson Broekemeier will join the team as a walk-on this summer.

Well that settles it... Carnes is now officially #2 behind Martinez.

We are now VERY thin at the QB position. I'll certainly miss the days of Cody being inserted into the game at our one yard line. Kid just didn't have it. Had we recruited/developed any talent at WR we could move Turner back to QB. Unfortunately...

"I think we can be real stout against the run, and I think our secondary is going to be really good. I mean, there's potential for us to have our best defense we've had here." Carl Pelini assesses the 2011 defense during spring ball.

We didn't win a championship but it isn't always about winning championships." Bo Pelini responds after finishing the season 9-3 and a third place finish in the Legends Division.

Carnes was going to end up as the #2 anyway. This does make sense that Green would look for a better oportunity for himself since the switch to a more run oriented offense. I thought he may try out for WR himself.
I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

Sucks to lose an experienced QB, but the kid never showed much of anything at the spot. A solid backup, but that was about it.

About fucking time this experiment was ended. I appreciate what a good teammate he seemed to be and the fact that he did not ever bitch about his position with the team, but a BCS level QB he ain't. The coaches certainly gave him plenty of opportunities to take the job and he just couldn't do it. Sad that we could've had Nathan Scheelhaus in that class instead of Green. Cody needs to transfer to the WAC or Sunbelt where he can be a dominant player.
There are offensive geniuses up and down the block, some real and some like Dan Hawkins, who either can't find a quarterback or doesn't recognize one.

Are you actually defending Cody?

The kid stinks outloud. Not even Charlie Weis could save Cody's sorry ass. Watson (errrrrrrr Bo's offense) last year made everyone look bad but Cody flat out can't play. Great kid but he was given every opportunity to take the starting job in 2009 and 2010 but time and time again shit his pants.

Now that we've cut some fat at the QB position it's time for Collins Okafor to GTFO.

not defending him, but it certainly wasn't in Cody's favor to have such a shitty position coach who hasn't made one QB better than his HS days. Cody may have been better, but probably not great, with a better position coach. It doesn't fall all on Cody's shoulders.

Don't act like a bitch just because you were wrong.

You said Watson, "hasn't made one QB better than his HS days."

Well, he has.

We all know Shawn is an average OC but I have a feeling he'll do ok at UofL. My guess is that Charlie Strong will allow Shawn to do his job and that is all you can ask for as an OC or QB coach.

Oh, and who the fuck are you kidding suggesting that Todd Peterson and Nate Swift didn't drop passes. Shit, Swift dropped passes all the fucking time. Our receivers have had the greasiest hands in college football since 2004 (Solich only ran QB draws).

Don't believe that this is mostly Cody's fault? Watch and see where Cody lands. He'll be lucky to find a FBS school that is willing to offer him a scholarship.

Green: Will never forget my time as a Husker

Posted by: Brian Christopherson on May 31, 2011 at 3:21PM CST

Bo Pelini and Cody Green made official in a joint statement Tuesday afternoon that the quarterback was planning to transfer from Nebraska. Green: I have made the decision to look at other options in continuing my education and college football career. I have enjoyed my time at Nebraska and am thankful for my teammates and the opportunities the coaching staff gave me to better myself as a player and a person. The support of the fans here has been great and my time as a Husker will never be forgotten."

The decision to leave was very difficult for me and my family. It was by far one of the hardest things Ive ever done. I talked to Coach Pelini and he has offered to assist me in finding another school to continue my playing career. I wish Coach Pelini and Nebraska nothing but the best this year and in the future.

It has all been said by others....but I have to wonder why this four or five star recruit with amazing physical skills could not be develped. Was he just not aggresive enough....or was it the coaching staff that F'd him over.

Oh well, here's to Cody! Everyone said he was a great team mate and person. I wish him well.

Because he is slow, tends to make poor decisions, fumbles easily and overthrows receivers with alarming consistency.

Green had numerous opportunities to be the #1 QB at Nebraska, yet never rose to the occasion. I wish him well, but he just isn't a very good QB, especially in the offense NU is supposedly moving towards.

One caveat: He was thrown into some very bad situations...usually with the ball inside our own five. That part is on the coaches. But his play is his responsibility. You either have the speed and/or accuracy or you don't. He doesn't have either.
