Gill said he didn't want to answer any questions. That's usually a sign that it was not his idea to leave.

He seems like a nice guy. I wish him luck.

Yeah..........you're wrong again. Look up about 7 or 8 posts

So, you are saying he wasn't asked or forced to resign? I think he was asked to resign (as I stated in my above post). I'm sure he'll find a job and most likely before Franklin will. But then Gill didn't ruin the Farrari

It's pretty common to resign a coaching job without having another one lined up, right? :?

To put it another way, anyone who believes he wasn't pushed out -- and further, anyone who didn't see this coming a year ago -- is stupider than Beano Cook looks.

Why exactly couldn't he apply/interview for other coaching jobs while holding down his current job, in case he doesn't get hired somewhere? That's how it is usually done, no?

Is that the most overrated NU QB rumor? In that case It is Frazier

That would be Steve Taylor.

Reactions to Gill's resignation

Tommie Frazier, Played quarterback for Gill

"He was there to make sure I was staying focused and that faith was my most important thing, not just football.

"There are a lot of opportunities out there. If no one hires him to become a head coach, then you kind of wonder what they're looking at.

"He can relate to players. If you don't know how to relate to players these days and show them you have confidence in them, then you're not going to be a very good head coach at this level. He truly is a players' coach. He's not one of these guys that's going to rant and rave when a player makes a mistake. He's going to help them learn from that mistake and make sure they don't make the same mistake.

"It is a sad day. I'm close to Turner, and it's like a shock to me.

"It went from him being my coach to him being like a brother, and when one of your brothers moves on, it is a sad day.

"When you have a dream, you have to take opportune chances to go out and try to make those dreams come true. That's all he's doing, and I commend him for that."

Tom Osborne, Former Nebraska head coach

"Turner meant an awful lot to that program. He was a great quarterback, our first African-American quarterback to play a significant role.

"I have been very close to him over the years. I recruited him, I coached him, he coached for me. Everything he did was first-class. He is a man with great character, a great role model, a man with a great ethic.

"I think it's a loss. I think he reached a point where he felt he needed to move on. Losing somebody of that quality always hurts. But it is important that he follows his heart and does what he feels he can be enthusiastic doing. Whatever happens, he certainly will serve some program very well."

Ron Brown, Former assistant coach with Gill

"He's an optimist, one of the most positive people you'll ever meet."

Mark Traynowicz, Former Gill teammate

"I remember him as a player, as a leader, a guy who took over the offense. When you were in the huddle with Turner, you knew who was in charge no ifs, ands or buts. He was always kind of a take-charge kind of guy.

"Looking back, I can see why Turner is a good coach. He always had a real grasp of the offense, probably because he spent so much time with Coach Osborne.

"I think he's going to be a great coach, wherever he goes. He's a football guy. He's got a great mind for the game, and he'll be good with the kids, too. He'll be a great recruiter. Moms will love him."

Ross Pilkington, Junior wide receiver

"I went in and spoke with him on Wednesday. We just met and talked about life, and it (Gill leaving) never came up.

"I think he's doing what's best for him. He wants to be a head coach somewhere, and he should be. He's a great coach. I just wish him the best.

"He gained the respect of all the players on the team. Everyone looks up to Coach Gill. He's just got great values. He's a great leader, and we all respect him.

"I thought he did a great job (making the transition from QB coach to receivers coach). He really brought a lot to us receivers and showed us what the quarterbacks were thinking. He had a lot of great techniques. He understands the position, and the transition went really well.

"The way he leads a team and gets players' trust ... any team would be lucky to have him as a head coach. They'll just play their hearts out for him."

Jeff Smith, Former Gill teammate

"I'm shocked because I know how much he loves Nebraska. He loves coaching and his heart has always been with Nebraska.

"I thought Turner should have been the next head coach after Frank Solich. He has the demeanor, the football knowledge and the wherewithal to make it work. He'll be good wherever he goes.

"Sometimes, the questions (about NU's failed two-point conversion in the 1984 Orange Bowl) come from the most unlikely places. People won't forget it. But Turner and I haven't talked about it since 1984, I think. We talk about our families. We talk about football. I know we're all a little frustrated with how things went this year. It bothered Turner they didn't win more. Heck, it bothered everybody. It'll take a while for Callahan to get it going there."

Milt Tenopir, Former assistant coach with Gill

"He's got his own reasons, I'm sure. I don't know what's going on up there for sure. I know Turner has other aspirations, but I don't know if he has anything going or not. The last I knew, he was very happy up there.

"I wish the best for him. He's a good person and good coach."
