I'm sure Huskerpedia is in a national state of mourning over this. Quite frankly it's about time he left. I think he could be a good head coach in the future, but it would never have happened at Nebraska. Why he was retained after last year I don't know; but I for one am not sorry to see him go. I do wish him the best of luck in what ever he pursues for the future.

Is that the most overrated NU QB rumor? In that case It is Frazier

How funny would it be if Gill got a HC gig before Franklin? But then considering the damage Franklin did to the Farrari, it wouldn't be shocking.

Maybe Gill is looking at some of the open positions and going for one or two of them...

Gill was retained as a token selection of the old staff, and the ties to the TO regime... I think everyone knew it was a temporary measure just to limit the uproar over Pedey's handling of the coaching situation in general... plus, Gill was responsible for recruiting TX, and I doubt they wanted to risk that blow at the end of recruiting last year.

so, which TX recruits do we have?

Clavin Mickens
Wallace Franklin
Cody Glenn
Lorenzo Jones
Broderick Hunter

I think that is it... we could potentially lose one of them, but I doubt it. especially since he is stepping down rather than getting the axe

Gill said he didn't want to answer any questions. That's usually a sign that it was not his idea to leave.

He seems like a nice guy. I wish him luck.

Turner Gill leaving NU

BY ELIZABETH MERRILL

WORLD-HERALD BUREAU
LINCOLN -Turner Gill, the last link to the Tom Osborne era, is gone from the Nebraska football program.

The longtime NU football assistant announced his decision Friday at a press conference. Gill broke down for almost a minute while reading a prepared statement. He declined to answer questions. Gill said he plans to pursue his goal of becoming a head coach.

Gill, 42, has spent 17 years of his life at NU, 13 as an assistant coach. He was one of two holdovers from the 2003 staff who were retained by new Coach Bill Callahan.

Gill became a Husker star as the team's quarterback from 1981 to 1983. He led NU to a 28-2 record, including 20-0 in the Big Eight, and three conference championships. As a senior, he finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting.

After last week's 26-20 loss to Colorado, which ended the Huskers' season, Gill hedged when asked if he plans to be back for 2005.

"Right now I plan on it," he said after the game. "I'll evaluate that after the football season and go from there."

Gill interviewed for the NU head-coaching job last winter. One week after Callahan retained him, Gill's name popped up as a candidate for the quarterbacks job with the Miami Dolphins.

Miami eventually hired Marc Trestman, and Gill served as NU's receivers coach in 2004.

Gill, who coached quarterbacks for 12 years, said last week that although 2004 was a different situation, he still enjoyed himself.

" . . . I love coaching and being around young men and helping prepare them as human beings," he said. I'm just thankful for the opportunity I've had."
"He asked if his contract was being terminated. I said, 'Yes, it was.'

No, you would just be an idiot for not trusting the man, and not listening to the radio, and not watching the news, and not watching ESPN.
